Education

The Hummingfish Foundation is dedicated to the support and promotion of community-based nature tourism and Green Entrepreneurs throughout the world. By means of education we can let people know more about us and our sustainability efforts.

TEDx – Dili talk – Who Speaks for Nature?

We are thrilled to be invited for a TEDx-Dili talk on the values of a green economy for the world and Timor-Leste.

Each of us are at fault for global climate change and WE are the key to positive change. Oil companies produce fossil fuels because we demand cheap gas. Timber companies clear forests because we demand wood and paper products. Oceans are choked with trash because we demand convenience. If we stop consuming, they will stop destroying.

Every choice you make as a consumer has an impact on our ecosystem. Join us today on a path to a sustainable future by making the right choices as a consumer.

Save the planet: Daniel Groshong at TED x LingnanUniversity

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.

Renaissance Collage lecture and Hummingfish fundraiser

What a great thrill to speak to the year 6 kids at Renaissance Collage in Hong Kong.  The kids where so engaged and curious about environmental conservation, that they have decided to organize a fundraiser for The Hummingfish Foundation at their school in November 2015.

We would like to thank the Renaissance Collage year six kids for their outstanding effort selling Maubere Mountain Coffee and Ai-Funan all natural handmade soaps at Renaissance College during the week of November 9th, 2015.

The ecosystems of the world depend on hard working young people such as the Renaissance kids and Hummingfish would not be able to achieve our vision of adding value to nature without them.

Groshong speaks to students at Yau Ma Tai Catholic Primary School

On February 8th, 2012, Hummingfish founding director, Daniel J. Groshong spoke to a class of top tier kids at Yau Ma Tai Catholic Primary School in Hong Kong.

After the presentation, Neil Stewart, the NET teacher who invited Groshong to speak had the following to say;

This is the stuff of Boy’s Own Magazine!  Daniel Groshong retired US senior military instructor:  Daniel Groshong, professional photographer, whose photographs have appeared in hundreds of magazines around the world, including Time Magazine, Paris Match, Bloomberg and Penthouse: Daniel Groshong, expert on East Timorese politics and personal friend of President José Ramos-Horta, and finally, Daniel Groshong, the vision behind, The Hummingfish Foundation, a charity, promoting sustainable tourism / green entrepreneurism in poverty stricken and remote parts of the world.

Modest to a fault, a gentle prod uncovers some amazing tales and adventures.  Tales of interviews with a gun wielding Taliban death squad member whose mission was to assassinate journalists in Northern Pakistan, secretly switching rolls of film whilst being jabbed in the chest by a screaming North Korean border guard armed with an AK-47 and simultaneously protecting his unconscious guide, dodging mayhem in Somalia and we’re still scratching the surface.

Now, the family man, based in Hong Kong, he sports a beautiful wife and two charming children.  He has opted for a less dangerous but nonetheless rewarding and exciting lifestyle and inevitably, his creation, The Hummingfish Foundation, and its website https://hummingfish.org/, both inspires and amazes.

The Hummingfish Foundation promotes several projects that reflect the diverse interests and connections of its creator; home stays with ethnic minority families in rural China; development of cottage industries such as coffee, salt and soap in East Timor; Honey production (Bee the change) and Elephant Towers in Thailand, and dive and eco-tourism in Cambodia.  What all these projects have in common is that they benefit not only the people themselves but the local environments.

Groshong speaks to kids at CWBS

On March 8th, 2012, Hummingfish founding director, Daniel J. Groshong spoke to year five kids at Clear Water Bay School in Hong Kong.

Miss Read, the class teacher said the following about Groshong’s presentation.

Hi, I just wanted to write and say thank you so much for taking the time to come in and talk to the children. I really appreciate that you made time in your busy day to come and see us. Your power point was perfect and your talk really helped to explain our Central Idea. It is very hard to keep a room full of 30 children interested, and you managed to do so from the moment you began to the moment you finished. After you left, the children also had a lot to talk about and reflect on.

Making our Inquiries meaningful to children is such an important part of developing their understanding. Your talk has been so helpful in making this possible.  I think that the children were equally impressed with your photographs, which are beautiful.  I wish you every success with your charity, which is so worthwhile.

Many thanks

Helen
